INCREASES IN NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE

The Government has announced that the adult National Minimum Wage (NMW) will increase from 1 October 2010.
For pay reference periods beginning on or after 1 October 2010, you will have to pay all eligible workers the follow
  • The adult rate will increase from £5.80 to £5.93.
  • The adult rate will extend to 21-year-olds from October 2010 (the threshold is currently age 22), so their rate will rise from £4.83 to £5.93.
  • The rate for 18- to 20-year-olds will increase from £4.83 to £4.92.
  • The rate for 16- and 17-year-olds will go up from £3.57 to £3.64.
  • Apprentices currently exempt from the NMW (eg those under the age of 19 and older apprentices in the first year of apprenticeship) will also be given a minimum wage and that will be £2.50.
